Lake Michigan, front and center
South Haven is built around its water. The town has multiple public beach access points, with South Beach - wide sand, real surf, and the historic red pier lighthouse - voted Michigan's best beach in the USA Today's 10 Best Readers' Choice awards. North Beach sits across the channel with its own following, and the nightly sunset over open water is a genuine local event.
On the water: charter fishing for salmon, steelhead, and perch; kayaking and paddleboarding on the Black River; and boat watching along the harbor when the drawbridge lifts.
A party every season
National Blueberry Festival - August
One of the country's longest-running fruit festivals, celebrating the town that calls itself the Blueberry Capital. Pancake breakfast, parades, pie, and peak-summer beach weather. (2026 dates: Aug 6-9)
Harborfest - June
Dragon-boat races, live music, and kickoff-of-summer energy on the water - a South Haven tradition for over 30 years.
Ice Breaker Festival - February
Ice sculptures downtown, chili, cardboard sledding - proof this is a year-round town (and why the fireplace matters).
Jazz Festival - September
Two days of live jazz in Dyckman Park with the downtown social district in full swing. Bring lawn chairs.

The Napa of the Midwest is your backyard
South Haven sits in Michigan's fruit belt on the Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail. Right in town, you can taste at 12 Corners Vineyards' downtown tasting room and grab a pint at Three Blondes Brewing, Harbor Light Brewery, or the South Haven Brewpub.
A short drive opens up the countryside: Cogdal Vineyards just outside town, Fenn Valley Vineyards in Fennville (tours and winemaker dinners), Warner Vineyards in Paw Paw — one of Michigan's oldest wineries — and Saugatuck Brewing Company up the coast. Prefer to leave the driving to someone else? Local tour outfits will happily chauffeur your tasting day.
Links golf in dune country

An Arthur Hills-designed, links-style par 72 wound through sand dunes and fescue, with lake winds keeping things honest — widely rated among Michigan's best public rounds, just 11 minutes from the house.
Beeches Golf Club
An 18-hole, 7,100-yard course about four miles from downtown — five tee sets, friendly rates, and a grill for afterward. It's a short 10 minute drive.
